If you want to get a girlfriend, you can start with your friend. Ask a common friend who could set you up on a blind date with someone they know. An advantage to this is that you could trust that your friend pretty much have an idea of whether itll work for both you and the other girl.

If you find a girl that you like, start the conversation and make it casual. This is very important. You can make a joke but make sure you are good about it. If you cant pull it off, maybe you could just try making her talk and know what interest her. Be very attentive and listen to what she is saying.
